Raw fish

Yesterday I went to the supermarket and sort of had Anne from Quilting Bebbs in mind. Her daughter is doing a report on food in different cultures (I think. I'm not really sure of the details on that.) and so I took along my camera "just in case". Well, look what I stumbled upon! The supermarket was hosting an event where a tuna was being cut up for sashimi right in the middle of the shopping aisles. This may be a more common sight in the towns along the coasts of Japan (and most of Japan is coastline) but we live in the mountains about as far away from ocean as you can get in Japan so this was a big deal. There was quite a crowd of spectators awaiting samples and ready to grab the sashimi as it got put out so I wiggled my way in there and took some pictures.

Just as I pulled out my camera the tuna head was being put in a bag and there were people grappling for it so what you see in the headless fish. I think this was a fairly small tuna, some are so big that use cranes to hoist them from table to cutting "board". I did pounce on a chunk when I was finished taking pictures and it was the main dish of last night's dinner. Tetsu pronounced it one of the most delicious pieces of sashimi he's had in a long time.

I went along and took other pictures as I shopped. Well, canned goods and vegetables while they are different from what you find in American supermarkets, are not that interesting to look at but I did snap away in the delicatessen department. A lot of sushi and a lot of colorful obentos. Obentos are wonderful boxed lunches and they can be a lunch option instead of noodles or fast food. I found this hilarious article about obentos. It really gave me a laugh!

Yum. I'm getting hungry!

I love sushi and would be in heaven to come across that in our grocery stores. I would grill the tuna . . if only I could get it fresh! You're making me very hungry!

Those obentos are so beautifully presented - they look almost too pretty to eat

DH says Japanese Spaghetti is the best spaghetti ANYWHERE, that he ate it almost everyday at lunch, lol.

I'd love to have a bento box to take to work for lunch. Wonder where I could find a travelling one here...well...on the 'net, cuz I sure won't find one in the desert!

That certainly is fresh fish if you can get it as it is being cut up. The obento box does look pretty. The article was hilarious. I wish they sold obento boxes like that here - with American food. It looks like a quick easy way to have lunch.

I'm fortunate to have a wonderful Japanese restaurant about a mile from me. People come from all over NY but it's very small so I get food at lunch time when there is no crowd. The chef is wonderful & I love it all but the Futomaki, yakisoba,Tamago, and salmon hand rolls are my favorites. I could eat a whole obento of just those things before I actually get to the sashimi. The only bad thing is my family doesn't care for it so I have to find friends to go with for lunch. Now that you've shown this, guess where I'm lunching tomorrow????

I am not a big fan of sashimi, but I sure do love the sushi rolls. Tempura asparagus with cream cheese is my new favorite!

Thanks so much for sharing your path to christianity. I am not very good at evangelizing either.

Loved this post. We have nice Sushi bars here, & there are boxes of food that look very similar to those Obento boxes.
We had a wonderful night out at a Japanese Restaurant, & the chef flicked food at us!

That was a very funny article. Since we eat with our eyes first, the presentation of the obentos is spectacular.
