Happy Village finished!

Yeah! I finished my Happy Village (well, no label yet.) It was a very quick, fun project and I'd like to do it again. I think it is considered a collage, not a quilt.

I'm happy with the colors. I think I could have put more thought into the placement. The quilting is not so great but it was a practice session in machine quilting anyway so I got practice. If I did this again I might want to put a border on it. I'd also like to do this again with some sky place and not so much busyness. (Some great examples in the book. Trees etc.!)

Does anyone know of a great site that has a pictorial and detailed tutorial of putting mitered binding on a quilt by machine? I have done hundreds of quilts, most of them with mitered binding and I realized that the part of the quilt that I am always least happiest with is the very warped corners. You'd think I'd have improved over the years but I've never been pleased with the way my corners turn out. I'll try taking a picture tomorrow and see if I can show you my very poor handwork. I've followed book directions all these years, but I just can not get a sharp corner. I must take one stitch too many or too few or something. I think if I could just master this technique I would be much happier with my finished products! Help please! (And pictures if at all possible!)

As for my machine quilting... Well, not great but then I had a helper who oversaw all my work. It is very difficult machine quilting with extra weight sitting on the quilt!

what book did you get the idea for the village collage from again? I really love how it turned out, and may even be tempted into consumerism and another book purchase :-)

The best binding video that I have seen is on Sharon Schamber's website - go to www.sharonschambernetwork.com

It is under the "free" tutorials and is called Binding the Angel Quilt. Good Luck, Denise

What a beautiful quilt! I think you picked just the right colors for it - if they were brighter, it would be too busy, and if they were lighter, it wouldn't be so happy-looking :)

Tanya,
your happy village reminds me of Lombard Street in San Francisco - the colorful, flower-filled street that is suppose to be the crookedest street in the world. It's charming work, and I agree with the other gals on the binding sites - they already gave you the ones I was going to mention.

Woohoo for you!!! What a fun quick quilt. I like the business, but I suspect that's no surprise. Good luck with your binding.

Tanya - this village quilt is beautiful - the colours are so soft and understated. I've no idea how you managed to machine quilt with the cat on it - it's hard enough with the weight of the work sometimes. This is one piece of work I would certainly covet :o)

Once again a fellow blogger serves as temptress! I have way too many WISPs and yet I would LOVE to make a Happy Village! Really nice project, Tanya!

I love the houses. Such great colors. After reading the comments I watched the Schamber video/binding the angel. I might not do the whole glue thing, but the information about forming the mitered corners is fantastic!

Tanya -- I was going to give you a link to State of the Craft for the miter thing -- but, Shalina beat me to it. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to on my next quilt binding! I love these little houses, what fun!

I love your village. I have this book for MONTHS without doing one. I'm not starting one now, right before moving but it's definitely moving up my list. I'd like to do a city view too (I think).

This is marvelous - wonderful! I can't believe how quickly you finished this. What fun!

I was going to send you to Sharon Schambler's website but I see someone else already has. Since she wins top prizes - $10,000 in prize money - I consider her an expert.

Hi Tanya

We have just had Karen Eikmeier in New Zealand on a lecture tour. She was a great speaker and her books sold out long before she got to the nearest venue to me. Our quilt club has placed an order for them. She gave a slide show lecture of how to do this technique and her Accidental Landscapes technique. Almost as good as taking a class. The best part was that her tour was subsidised by the committee who ran our last National Quilt Symposium and the entry fee to the lecture was only $5. We had a fantastic night out. Your quilt is beautiful. I love the colours.
