Miscellaneous news

I just spent half an hour chatting with Tetsu. He sounds fine and assures me that all the animals are well. I consulted him on a few matters, things like "Do you think I should get an electronic collar for Choco so that we can try a new tactic to control her barking?" Tetsu suggested holding off until I get back to Japan since no one is complaining about Choco at the moment. Of course, Tetsu isn't at home all day so how would he know if Choco is barking and he's not there to answer anyone if they did want to complain. Anybody have an opinion on static collars? I was surprised to see so many dogs that seem to know their boundaries because of electric fences and I am constantly amazed by the well-behaved dogs that greet me on the street when they are out walking with their owners, or even sitting in their yards. Although we've tried training Choco she is very hyper and I can't get her to stop barking at all.

I also consulted Tetsu about purchasing a laptop. I'm using Leiya's and I really like hers. Our computer in Japan is about ready to give out and I hadn't heard from Tetsu since he went back to Japan so I wondered if the computer had just completely crashed and he wasn't getting our e-mails. Yes and no. Tetsu said he hadn't opened the computer once since he's been back just because it crashes so often he was afraid to even start it up after the three weeks that no one has used it. I guess he has been looking at my blog from his office computer though. I have the go ahead to do whatever I like on buying a computer. Tetsu won't use it so if I want to buy one in America (and in English) it doesn't affect him. Then again, I'm not sure the voltage and charging system is the same, I wouldn't be able to get insurance on it if I bought it here etc. etc. Still thinking this one through. Maybe better prices in the States...

Takumi visited us briefly and he left last night to pack up his apartment before going to Japan. It will be the first time for him to got back to Japan since he graduated from high school four years ago. I got him to take back a suitcase for me (mostly filled with quilt backing fabric). Takumi and Leiya won't see each other for probably a year (unless Leiya comes out to California again at Christmas) but Tetsu and I will see Takumi while he's in Japan though he's going to spend the first month traveling around to friends' home in other parts of Japan.

Let's see... Other things that we've been doing... Went to a street fair one evening and ate a lot of Kettle Corn. MMMMmmm. Good!

Had a barbecue and let Takumi do the honors of cooking. He needs to learn how the all-American man takes care of his family!

More family pictures of Grandma and me looking cheery in yellow.

Have a good day!

What a wonderful family. I suggest reading some really good dog training books. I like the ones by the Monks of Skeet (Hope that is spelled correctly.) It is easier to train a puppy then to retrain a grown dog but it can definitely be done. The electric collars are not for training but to reinforce the action after the dog has learned it. They are not for punishment although they don't really hurt the dog. They just remind the dog that he is not to do the action - like barking. It doesn't take long and the dog knows when he has that collar on, he is not to do the action. Here is an example. For several times a day for two weeks I walked Kipper on a long lease around the boundry of my property. When he started to go past it, I corrected him by a quick jerk on the lease and a low voice NO. After a few days he walked without crossing the boundry. Then he stayed in the yard but I knew he would test this when the lease was off. I put the electric collar on him and watched him. One day he took off. I called him and he keep going, so I zapped him on the lowest level. he kept going. I repeated it on the next higher level. He stopped, looked back at me and thought about it. Then he kept going. I repeated the command and zap on the high level. Kipper stopped looked at me as if to say, "How does she have a lease on me?" But he trotted right back. After a couple more tries, he had learned it and now runs around the yard but never goes out of it. When he was a puppy, I worked very hard to teach Kipper manners. All the work has definitely paid off. Both he and I are so glad we did the work.

I'll be interested in hearing what you do about the barking. Chesty is barking more now because of people and dogs going by the townhouse and I have to stop what I'm doing and run up or downstairs to quiet him down.

As far as being well behaved - he's trained well enough for me to know he *knows* what my commands mean - he just follows them when he feel like it. He's pretty stubborn!

Our Jessie also barks but so far it seems to annoy only me!! Must admit she is not the most well behaved dog! What lovely photos of you and Grandma and the kids.

My brother cured his dog of barking all day long while they were at work with the collar. It zapped when he barked. It only took a few days. The lady next door attests to the fact that Spencer doesn't bark during the day anymore.

Your Mom is so beautiful!

We have used the collar on one of our dogs and it does work eventually. (took a few zaps...I thought it was torture for him, (softy here). Takumi, Leiya, you and your Mother look beautiful together.

Reading your entries about your visit here reminds me of my aunts coming to visit every year. Since my grandmother went home to be with Jesus 17 years ago I have only seen them a handful of times. I miss them terribly and I miss that feeling you have when you are all finally together again. I know how you must be feeling right now with your family getting to be together again, even if for a short time. You have a beautiful family Tanya. Thanks for sharing.
Hugs!
Vanessa

which I could visit with you....you sound like my husband when he has to make a purchase....if we had gone to the mall together I would have shared my skills with you...we buy our computers in the USA , better prices and they do run in Italy although we have a different voltage. A piece of advice although they cost more , we all switched to macs ( apple) they have worldwide assistance and you can buy additional insurance time (their warranty lasts a year) they will service it all over the world . Next time you need suitcases go to TJ Max, as missionaries we are experts at buying suitcases, when we need an extra one we also go to the thriftshop , they always have good old samsonites for few dollars . Love , Roberta
