I was planning to make our yearly New Year card yesterday. We've done this for 24 years (since Takumi was born). For the first 20 years I just took a picture to the camera shop, paid a fee and they made the card for me. For the last 4 years I have done it myself.
HA! That's a lie! I have had Mrs. Ochiai do it for me and I printed it out myself. But this year I was going to get step-by-step instructions from Mrs. Ochiai and with two computers side by side I was going to mimic her every move and make a family Christmas card.
"I was going to..." means I didn't.
Just learning the different buttons (I've forgotten them all this morning!) took a lot of time. And then trying to make decisions like, do I want to fade out a picture or put a frame around it or use this font or that font etc. etc. took time. Mrs. Ochiai was patient. She made lunch and coffee. She made suggestions. She fixed things that I messed up.
I came home to try it alone last night. I want to put one picture of Tetsu and me and one picture of Takumi and Leiya on the card. And I want to include all the animals in our family. I am confused again. And I've found another reason why 1 dog and 6 cats are too many for one household. All their pictures won't fit on the card.
I wonder if my friends are going to hear from me this Christmas and New Years.

I would think Photoshop would be hard enough to learn in English, but even harder in Japanese. Well, it would be for me. Mrs. Ochiai sounds like such a lovely sweet person. I think your family and friends would be very happy with whatever you make for a Christmas card. They love you! So, go ahead and just have fun, Tanya!
What about putting all the pictures in a film strip on the side? Or in a crazy collage style?
You can do ANYTHING you want to silly...just stick to it!
Tanya,
I make a card like this every year. I use Photoshop or Picasa3 to crop and brighten all of my photos. But I just use a word processing program,a super simple card making program or Picasa3 for image collages. Picasa3 also makes makes many collage choices, and you can drag and rearrange them, yourself too, that can be printed off as such and words can be added as text.In English, free, online.
I think that this kind of play - scrapbook, slideshow, etc., is actually fun, but you have to be relaxed and willing to play with it. I think the hardest part isn't learning how to use the software, but making all those decisions. Just like in quilting, you have to learn to trust yourself.
I bet you can get the instructions in English on ebay. That might be easier....
Photoshop Elements is the program I use....it has a lot of features and can be challenging to learn even with a book. I took a few online classes last year and was surprised at how much I learned. There are a lot of free tutorials around the web too. These are from Adobe but you can do a google search and find lots more:
