CATS!

Toi is a real pain. He goes about life as he pleases... taking the best sitting spot, eating everyone's food, perfectly happy about how things revolve around him. In the mornings he and Patora get locked up in the laundry room (to keep the two of them from eating the other cats' food) and Patora goes completely crazy.

"Let me out of here!!!!"

Patora eats detergent boxes, paces back and forth on the washing machine so much that most days she runs the machine for me (if she hit two buttons consecutively the machine starts). She meows herself hoarse and bangs at the door knob trying to get out.

Toi? He settles down peacefully on a towel or some dirty clothes and naps amidst all of Patora's noise. And when I come in to let them out, Patora streaks by me while Toi leisurely yawns and stretches and sometimes just shifts position and goes back to sleep.

"I don't care. I'll come out later."

It sounds like Toi is a very laid back cat... and he is. Humans? Take them or leave them... Patora? He seems to like her. But the other cats?

"Let me at them!"

Already Velvet has psyche problems because of Toi's bullying. Vel is not allowed out of the sewing room because I've determined he is the peeing culprit. He does not like Toi and I guess wherever Toi has gone Vel feels the need to place his mark. Or when they happen to meet head on (and fight) then Vel pees right then and there... Sort of like a skunk.

And now Toi is starting to attack Cleo so Cleo lives up in the sewing room with Vel. I don't when this started regularly but the other day there was a MAJOR confrontation between Toi and Cleo. Toi would not let go! What a lot of noise and fur flying! I had to dump water on them to get them separated.

And Cleo came out the worse... His poor ear got torn! So now Toi (and Patora, she doesn't like Chip) has been banned to the cat house.

I really have too many cats. And YES, they ALL have been spayed and neutered!!!

I totally understand. For about 10 years we have had upstairs and downstairs cats. The bully is now old and weak but another one has decided if we let him upstairs he will pee in the bathtub. Oh well. Gotta love em.

You are a saint, Tanya to do as well as you do! You went through so much trying to decide whether to keep each one as he/she showed up at your door and you have been so loving and so generous to have taken them in and loved them as you have. But goodness, this is worse than children! I feel so much better now about the hassles of the few that I have! Bless you and may they all get more mellow as they..and you age ;)

Golly, and I thought dog hair was a problem!
When we had cats with issues we put them all together in a large cage and let them work it out. Same with kids... "You guys stay in there and discuss it until everyone is satisfied with the results!" The problem is that cats are not pack animals. How many is too many???

I think it all depends on the cats... Through some unusual circumstances when I was around 14, my family managed to accumulate around 25 cats. They lived outside because of an earthquake damaged house. Most were spayed and neutered, some not. However, I will say that they didn't fight with each other. In fact they'd go out hunting in packs, and bring in much larger prey than was normal. Hares, and large rabbits. Yes, they also got dry cat food, but when you get that many domestic cats together, I think the dynamics change. Smaller groups tend to be more territorial. And no, *smiles* I am not suggesting that you get that many cats. That many cats come with their own special set of issues.

Best of luck. ;)

Wow! You certainly have your hands full. I only have 3 cats and they get along ok...sort of. Silas likes Simba but not Snowflake. Simba likes everybody. Snowflake likes Simba but she does not care for Silas. Snowflake & Silas like to sleep with me, one on each side. Sometimes, one of them will look at the other sideways and they will start scrapping on the bed, while I am trying to sleep. What a ruckus!!

They each have their own personalities...gotta love them.

My two cats are spayed & neutered and they still don't like each other. Each one wants to be an only cat. After 6 or 7 years now there is less hissing and growling but they still aren't buddies & never will be. At least nobody pees where they aren't supposed to. One is an indoor cat and the other is indoor/outdoor so they get to spend plenty of time apart. Maybe that helps. Good luck with your crew.

We have the four cats, they spend most of the summer outside and for the most part get along. There is a pecking order though. Our pet rat died last summer (natural causes, no cat ate him)....and now my middle son is saying... Can I get another rat?? So things could be worse...you could have a rat in the mix too.

Hi Tanya,
WOW...I am going through this 'pecking order' with three cats right now. I actually only have one cat that looks exactly like Cleo and she is 22 years old, and is a small cat. In Sept my son's house burned and I had to take his 2 large identical black and white cats. My Patches is being STALKED by son's two cats! When we notice the stocking they each go into a large dog cage until they settle down. Once a cat starts stalking you can't hardly break their determination. I am luckly because when the house is rebuilt they go back home! HURRAY! :)

Oh Tanya - I don't envy you dealing with this - when dh and I got married, he had 3 cats and I had 2. None of them got along, and then one of his had kittens. We had 14 cats in here, all peeing wherever, it was chaos. We farmed them all out when I got pregnant and didn't get another one for a couple of years - but luckily we had a very understanding family, who made room for them. I don't know what we would have done if folks hadn't taken them in.
