Choco and Vel went to the vets this weekend. Both for routine vaccines. Oh, how they hate the vet! (and he's such a nice man too.) The minute I got Vel into the car he started up a racket that continued the 30 minutes to the next town. Remember the post about evacuating with your animals? I can not image trying to live with ONE cat in a car for weeks on end let alone 6! ONE cat's racket has me batty after the 30 minute drive.

Choco on the other hand enjoys the drive. TOO MUCH! She jumps around the car until it is dangerous to drive with her so I tied her into the back luggage area... There she is with her 15 pound bag of dog food (and a bag of recyclable milk cartons). Drivers behind us waved to her which she acknowledged by licking the back window. I've tried dog seat belts and barriers but she just moves around and paws at me too much. What she'd really like is to stick her head out of the window and let her ears flap (like Rose on the Titanic) but it's too cold for that. I'm not freezing my fingers off so that my dog can pretend she's a sea captain.

So a quick trip to the vet and back. 5 more animals to go. Their vaccines are due later in the year.

You are so good to your animals, Tanya!
Nikko also loves to ride in the car but will sit where she is told. She seems to know where we are going and when we get there. It is a lot more fun riding with her than my former dog who got carsick or my husband who falls asleep before the first traffic light.
I am so thankful that our vet, whom we have used since he graduated from vet school over 25 years ago, does housecalls. He comes over once a year and does all the quick exams and shots for all. There is another one in town whose whole practice is housecalls.
We had a vet who did house calls for our cats, too. We don't have cats any more and take the two dogs to the vet. We go quite a distance away because we like him so very much. This is a guy who will do blood tests to see if the animals need vaccinations before just stuffing them full of more and more vaccinations. Our dogs love the vet and think they are going to visit friends when they go there.
you are such a good mom to your animals Tanya. My dog Misty loves to ride, but I am so very lucky that she just lays down in the back seat and uses the arm rest as a pillow.
Tanya, I don't know if this will help, but I have a cat who used to scream/howl during car trips. Medication only helped a little. Almost by accident (full car during a move) I discovered if he could SEE, it didn't bother him. So now, Either his carrier is on top of a big stable box, or I have him in a halter w. leash, so he can jump up on the back of the seat. (You have to tie the leash to something far back, or he'll try to help you drive, lol! Amazing the difference!! He loves to travel now.
Good luck!
My cats are the opposite of Puddle's - In the carrier they howl unmercifully, unless I cover it so they can't see out. And I try to pick each one up every day and walk a few steps. I learned that I picked them up so rarely that they all thought that a "pickup" meant "time to go to the vet!"
A few years ago we had 5 cats, and had to take them in separate cages, all very vocal no matter what we tried. Now we take one at a time, the cage on my knee and Hugh drives, and the cat is much quieter. Our vet is so caring, and makes even sad visits easier,if they can be . Tanya, I hope you have gasoline for vet visits, quilting shop visits, the hot bathing place visits, and groceries, and kerosene for the warmth of your 6 cats, the dog and last but of course not least, you and Tetsu.
you have time to recover before the next trip later on.
Cheers, Nancy J
You have the perfect metaphor to describe your dog's attitude. Like Rose in Titanic??? That's hilarious. I can imagine Choco would like to wave her ears in the morning breeze, or licking the back window to say hi to all ;)
Oh yes! The back windows of my car are covered in dog nose. Is licking neater??? :-D
I don't know if this is possible where you live, especially given the current situation of radiation concerns and all, but my mother had a friend who had about 5 cats, and rather than taking them to the vet for routine visits, she paid the vet to come to her house. I'm sure it was expensive, but it was easier and a lot less stressful for everyone. Just an idea.
Choco looks like she REALLY enjoys that - Vel, not so much, lol. I used to have a kitty that went with me everywhere - he rode on my shoulders [even in the car, back before seat belts] like a parrot.
