That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the meals. I did. Because there wasn't much to do all day, we patients on the orthopedic ward looked forward to the three meals and gobbled down all that was set before us. And it was enough! In fact, if I think of a word to describe my one week hospital stay, the word would be "Enough". The hospital wasn't glamorous but people were being healed. It was enough. The food wasn't restaurant standards, but patients were filled and nourished. It was enough. I learned how much more I eat than I really need! (Of course I burn a few more calories in my normal daily life but even so...)
So here are a few pictures of my meals while in the hospital. I think I took a picture of each meal but I guess you don't want to see 23 pictures of hospital trays.
I noticed some people got rice gruel instead of the bread but I guess the nurses decided I'd probably prefer bread rather than gruel.
Cold noodles, dipping broth, grated radish and chopped mushrooms, deep fried fish cakes. Orange slices.
I noticed when leaving the hospital that the bill included a meal fee for about $70. I stayed 8 days in the hospital and had 23 meals. 23 meals for $70! Pretty reasonable!!!
You can see how I might expect to lose some weight... but I didn't. And now that I'm home my friends keep bringing me fancy cakes... And I'm not up to walking great distances nor back at the pool...
Hospital food was enough. Now I'm struggling with over abundance!

in hospital ones days are relieved by the Dr's visit, bathroom trips, physio, and talking to the other ladies, and then there are THE MEALS. I hope if any Japanese lady is in hospital in NZ, a friend will bring her food she likes,I would struggle with cabbage for breakfast!!Enjoy the fancy cakes, the rest,no walking or pool swimming. This is meant to be your time at home.Relax with the cats,Choco, and Tetsu.Enjoy!! Greetings to Leiya and Yanna also. Cheers from Jean
Indeed, it is good to sit back now and then and realize that we do have enough. :-)
I don't know what I'd do with no snacks from time to time. I wouldn't like being in the hospital. Enjoy your snacks now, there is later to walk/swim away the weight. Thanks for sharing.

Glad you are back home, hope you are healing well. Your hospital visit sounds interesting, though I would struggle with that food.
Enjoy your friends and their snacks, you will soon be working all the extra calories off.
Leiya and Yanna were great, they did a good job, but its good to have you back.
Cheers,
Marie from Rockingham
Definitely cheap and light meals--I would definitely have lost weight, lol! But as you say, it was enough. Glad you are home, even if you are now trying to resist cake :)
Tanya, that would NOT have been enough for me, lol. I just had dinner and I'm getting hungry looking at it. Enjoy all the goodies your friends are bringing you - you need to keep up your strength, right?
This was really interesting to
see. Our hospitals serve bigger
meals and offer snacks at night.
After my daughter had a baby she
could order about anything she
wanted. She choose a toasted
cheese sandwich and a big ice
cream shake.
Oh my, Tanya, the meals are so different from hospitals here..not that ours are better, because our local hospital leaves a LOT to be desired when it comes to meals. We are allowed to choose some things, but sometimes the choices are not so great..and family/friends often bring in sandwiches/milk shakes, etc...I'm just very happy you are home, with familiar things, and your sweet animals..hugs, Pat in IN...P.S. Your package of, well, you know what, should be there in about 10 days..I also have some fabric to share and will be sorting that out soon...I've opened the 2nd obi and ooohed and awwwed over it..and Bill did,too..but I put it back in the paper, tied it up and will take it to Mary's next time we go, as we ALL enjoyed the 1st one soooo much and know the same will be true with this one...I'll bet your roommates were surprised when you got the package with fabric/thread/who knows what else while you were there...an unusual "hospital gift",to say the least...and Mary loves to share her love of fabric, thread, etc..so I'm sure you've not heard the last from her....hugs, my friend, and I'm happy to give a good report on your health to the local Rotary Club next Tuesday when I speak to them...
One of the things people complain about most in NHS hospitals is the food. They're on such a tight budget that there is barely enough and it's pretty poor quality. Of course if you go into a private hospital it's better, but then you have to pay for it. When our older son was in hospital for an extended time we used to take him some chips (french fries) every now and then; he could smell us coming and the other people in the ward were so envious.
The meals look very interesting and pretty good, too. I don't remember being billed separately for food while in the hospital in the US. I haven't been admitted since I had babies so it has been a looooong time.
To me that looks like more food than I would normally eat in a day. I would have trouble eating so much cabbage as I am not particularly fond of cabbage. Also white rice. I would certainly hope I could get brown rice instead, I can't understand the white factor in rice and bread. Seems so unhealthy. Oh well, to each their own. Glad you are home again. You are plenty slim enough, don't fret about your weight.
Wow, I would have gained on those meals, so much more than my average day... and someone else does the cooking and washing up too!
