Luggage tags again

Getting down to the final week now. I have a normal schedule down to the last day (Friday) so I need to get the important things squeezed in between teaching.

What could be more important that sewing!?

I decided I needed some luggage tags (though I haven't thought about which suitcase I'm going to use) and I worked on those yesterday. While I was at it I thought my niece might like a set too because I hear that she is going to be spending two weeks in Europe while I'm visiting the States.

These luggage tags are wonderful! I have made four or five sets of these for friends and you would think I am getting good at making them. I love the way they close and keep private information PRIVATE.

Definitely go visit Morah's tutorial and give these a try! I'm warning you though... You need to know your sewing machine feet. A regular foot, a zipper foot (not for a zipper but to make a nice outline around things), a Teflon zig-zag foot...

"Whoops, forget that project." you say?

I have made these by putting tissue between the regular foot and the plastic... It works... And when I finally went out and bought a Teflon foot I couldn't buy a zig-zag foot so my plastic is held down by a straight stitch.

And finally you need to use that blankety-blank button hole foot!!! Well, practice a couple of times on some scraps. (If you keep lifting the foot lever and pull the button hole tray forward or back, you can made the long button hole this pattern calls for. It IS possible!)

The cat tags are for me (duh) and the stripes are for my niece.

Now to get out the suitcases and think about packing!

I had remembered the last time you made tags and I used this tutorial to make over 60 luggage tags for our first Scottie Dog Quilts Alaskan Cruise. When we sponsored our cruise to Mexico this past Feb. I again made one luggage tag for each of the cruisers. Now we at Scottie Dog Quilts are sponsoring a Quilting Cruise around the Hawaiian Islands for March 2012....yep, I'm making tags again!!! Thanks for stearing me this way.

I love having something bright like that when the parade on the luggage belt begins. You will be able to find your luggage even if your bag looks like fifty others.

Wow!Wow!Wow!!!!! I am so impressed with your explainations!! No wonder I get soooo many hits on this little tutorial!!! Your tags are great and it puts me to shame because I haven't made one in a loooong time!!!! BTW, you can also use blue painters tape to hold down the plastic and sew over it. The foot won't stick. Just remove the tape immediately...

I like those luggage tags--very unique.

Oh, man, I hope you are not arriving on July 16th--they are CLOSING THE 405 for 53 hours starting Friday evening and going through Monday morning to destroy the old Mullholland Bridge with explosives. They are calling it CAR-mageddon!

I remember the first time you posted about these, and I made two for my son and his partner who were going on holiday. I haven't had any need to make any more, but you've given me an idea for Christmas presents. And I like Morah's additional tip above; I remember finding it quite difficult to sew on the plastic last time.

Just the perfect gift to have in stock for unexpected visitors, friends or someone who might need a tag.Love the cats, who else would they be for??? I have a teflon foot for the Bernina 440, and it makes sewing the slippery stuff so easy,i.e. heavy duty waterproof fabric for generator covers, extra heavy nylon for quad covers,I'm sure my Mum could have done with this in the days when she sewed calf covers with thick leather straps, those were days before nylon was invented,no clear plastic,no buttonhole foot either. How sewing has changed since 1940's. Cheers, Jean.

Make some extra - I made a few and had so many people ask for them, including folks at the airport, at the check-in location, etc. My sister hung them on her kitchen cabinet doors, and her friend asked for 3 of them which she put in a shadow box as ART! Whew - If I'd known how popular they were, I'd have done a much better job. Mine did not NOT have ID/nor plastic inserts in them. Just a string/ribbon to tien them on. I think they might "walk" if left on luggage - so many people commented on them. 8-)))

Ooh... I wish I knew it earlier. I just returned from my internship trip to S'pore. I will make similar tag for my next trip, then. Thanks for the link to Morah's blog. I'll follow the instruction given. And I LOVE your tag with cat on it ;)

I made one of these for my daughter when she went to Japan. When we went on a recent trip, she lent me her suitcase, but pulled off the tag, because she wanted to use it for her suitcase! I think I need to make more. I didn't use any special feet though, I just winged it with whatever I had.
