Machine quilting... Hand quilting...

Thursday patchwork day was great fun.  We met for the first time this year and lots of winter holiday tales to tell.

As promised, Mrs. Ochiai photographed my Fiery Starr quilt for me, with ME in the picture.

And the ladies raved and complimented me on my machine quilting.

But you know...

Mrs. Furui pulled out a simple quilt she has been making for the past four years (all pieced by hand).  Such a simple pattern... Nine Patch.  But as usual, Mrs. Furui is going to do fantastic things with her hand quilting!  It makes me sigh...

"Yes!  Hand-quilting is really the ultimate art form!"

And hand-quilting really makes the quilt!  I would have put in a motif in the open white squares and maybe some vines in the rectangles but Mrs. Furui has a very intricate pattern going.  Such beauty.  The only drawback that I can see is that this will probably take her another 4 years to complete...

Just a question. What did Mrs. Furui use to mark her quilt? It's a very different and graphic pattern. I would have done something else too but I really like this.

Tanya - they are both beautiful quilts- each stunning in their own way. I love the fabrics and colors you chose and the quilting makes the quilt sing.
Each will be treasured by their owners.
Thanks for sharing these two wonderful quilts,
Warmest regards,
Anna

I love Mrs. Furui's work! It's simple, but elegant. I still think your quilt is outstanding! I hope my next quilting session is as beautiful as yours!

Your quilt pic looks wonderful with you in it! I have hand quilted only small projects and it is likely to stay that way. My skills are not good enough to warrant anything larger for quite a few more practice pieces. Mrs. F's work is extremely gorgeous, though!

I'm often in awe, when seeing such beautiful machine quilting - and YOUR quilt is simply gorgeous - which I just can't do (even machine piecing is such a stress to me), and when I see my quilt tops pile growing I even wonder "will I have time to handquilt all of them ?? If only I could machine quilt!" Mrs. Furui's uiling is such a work of art, as you say. After all... who cares about another 1 or 2 years before finishing it ? ;>)

THANKS for showing, dear Tanya !
XOXOXOXOXO
NADINE

Love them both, but if I had to choose I'd go for yours, it's so vibrant and has such movement in it. I'd never have the patience to hand quilt a big quilt so intricately, and a white quilt! In my house it would be filthy within a few weeks, the cat or the dog would have decided to 'help' or decided that it was their newest favourite bed.

I'm with Nadine on thin one. No way I could make a machine do that. Mrs. Furui's is lovely but I seldom leave large areas to quilt and in-the-ditch doesn't really show up.

I wish I could hand quilt. Actually, I wish I could machine quilt anything other than a meander! I love patchworking, but hate the quilting I then need to do *sigh* (I don't mind binding ... )

I'm not a hand quilter but I do agree that it really looks nice. There seems to be much more control in hand quilting. I love both quilts! I especially like the colors in your fiery star quilt and the quilting motifs really stand out on the darker fabrics. My thoughts - you need to do what works for you! Lots of times I admire what others can do and try to imitate when I feel it will work for me. I'm working on feeling comfortable with my own skills and being content with that. I hope!
I so enjoy reading your blog!
