Rocks

Tetsu's rocks now adorn our living room window.  He is so pleased with them.  He considers them a focal point of our interior decorating.

"Tanya, we ought to go to the coast more often and collect rocks.  It is exciting to see what we can find!  (He can find.)

After Tetsu had combed the beach for awhile and we were heading back to the car with his arms full of rocks I pointed out one in the sand.

"Look at this piece of wood."

"That's not wood.  That's a rock."

"Tetsu, that's not a rock, that's a piece of wood.  Look, it has a nail hole in it."

"That is definitely not a piece of wood.  That's a rock.  Feel how heavy it is."

"It's heavy, but it doesn't have the iciness of the other rocks...  It's a piece of wood."

Once home the rocks got spread out on the living room table so that Tetsu could admired them and then pick and choose his favorite.  By far, the piece of wood/rock  is our favorite.  It has now become part of our daily topic of conversation.

"Is it a rock?  Or is it a piece of wood?"

I don't know how we are ever going to know.  We'll probably just take a survey of everyone who comes in the house...

"Hello, hello.  Please come in.  Before you sit down, would you give your opinion?  Is this a rock or is this a piece of wood?"

I don't expect a picture on my blog to result in any answers either... But at first glance... Is this a rock or a piece of wood?  (If you click on the picture you can get close up.)

Of course, really knowing would take the fun out of it all.

Petrified wood?

Definitely wood - but I wouldn't want to disagree with Tetsu LOL!

I live on the coast of Northern CA. This looks like wood to me. It's probably "root" wood which is often more dense to begin with. It may have a lot of water stored inside it (which will evaporate slowly). If it isn't "icy" like a rock, it's probably wood...even petrified wood is icy.

This is really close to home because I am a rock hound too. I most often bring a rock back from each trip and that pile looks so familiar. I also have lots of petrified wood (those really are rocks) that I picked up on the Northwest coast. I really have a hard time limiting my collection but how many times do you go to the top of Mt Fuji or stand on the Canada-New Hampshire border? You can't go there with your eyes shut, can you?

Tetsu and I are kindred spirits. I have collected simple rocks from Central Coast California clear up to the Arctic Circle and clear over to the Giza Pyramids. I am a collector!

I vote that it's petrified wood. (i.e., rock, at this point.) What a find!

I vote fossilized wood.

Looks like rock - rocks can have metal in them. Sport rock climbers put bolts in rock faces to establish routes.

But maybe petrified... I read on the internet that "Mine timbers petrify at a very fast rate, even just a few years, when exposed to mineral-rich water." So both of you can be right.

I think it's a piece of wood, my husband says it's a rock. Men, go figure!

It looks like a rock and I agree with others that it might be petrified wood.

No idea! I would love to handle them too, I don't collect rocks but I love the feel of pebbles and stones smoothed over thousands of years by the sea, and the subtle colourations you can find.

We used to have to restrict the children to one rock a day from the pebble beach where we often go for holidays ... we still call it our 'stone of the day' and collect them wherever we go. Mostly, they end up in a decorative pile in the garden, now inevitably called 'the rock garden'!

I cannot go on a walk without a rock coming home in my pocket! They are all over my house, and in my yard.

Your favorite is petrified or fossilized wood..just say you are both right and enjoy!

Wood, in my opinion. But whatever it is, it looks interesting and was a good find for Tetsu!

Me thinks the rock is made of wood!

I live on the coast and never leave the beach without first finding a heart shaped rock for my collection.

My guess: piece of wood from an old sunken ship???? And I have just the perfect rock for Tetsu's collection. Keep in mind that my dad carried this rock about a mile thru Michigan woods decades ago...it is a large glacier-rolled rock, looks like an egg..but weighs about 100 pounds!!! So, he's just gonna have to dream about it, or I have to get a job to pay the postage...giggle...hugs, Pat in IN

Now, I'm going to stick my neck out on this one:
It seemed to me from my geology classes that petrified wood was slightly lighter in weight than sedimentary rock -- almost like some lavas. Also, in studying the close-up image, I would have to lean towards Tetsu's opinion of a rock. There are pockmarks and striations that mimic wood, but have a definite rock texture (rough and pebbly).

Taste it. I bet the texture will tell you.
