Field burning

Yesterday morning the local farmers were burning their fields, ridding them of undergrowth and insects and getting ready for spring planting.

There was a haze over all the countryside and the stringent smell of smoke.  I took these pictures from the church's front steps.

Oh look.  I'm glad to see there are fire engines attending the field burning.  The volunteer firemen were out patrolling the fields.

Traditional red fire trucks.  No sirens today.

It's good to see the burn is controlled.

some people do that here too in Arkansas US, always nice to see the firetrucks around if the season is dry

Field burning used to be a common sight on UK farms .. not so much any more, but it's a useful tool against bugs etc.

Weatherman says snow is on the way. It's not spring yet, I guess.

One of my favorite memories with my father was burning our back field at the end of winter.
It was great fun and the smoke smelled sweet.
