So today I'll show you an old quilt in honor of Takumi's birthday. This has a label on it that says
"6/3/93
To Takumi, Love Mommy"
That's what I call a simple label. 1993...so it must have been made for Takumi's 8th birthday. Mrs. Furui and I found this pattern in an Australian quilting book (I think) and we both decided to make it for our boys. This was just when we were getting the hang of roller cutting and piecing with a sewing machine. Up until then I think we had done all our piecing by hand.
I spent a lot of time looking for a large leaf background print and finally found one that was suitable and bought 4 yards of it. And then the very next day I found THIS leaf print that I fell in love with so I bought it and used it instead. I don't know what I did with the original 4 yards...
This was before I'd even heard of machine quilting so I just hand quilted around the dinosaurs. There are no swirls or patterns or other artwork. If I were do this again I'd probably try some fancy machine quilting in the background maybe following the leaf pattern. I'm not going to mess with it again though. It is a record of my "progress" and patchwork "skills".
Mrs. Furui's quilt came out about the same and both of our boys seemed happy with their quilts. I guess. It is fine for a young boy but once he'd grown out of it, Takumi has never looked at it again. Mrs. Furui's son took his dinosaur quilt away with him to college but Takumi's just sits here on the shelf. I ought to make him a more appropriate quilt but he doesn't take too much interest in my hobby. Maybe someday...
So today the Dinosaur quilt is up on the wall for a day or two just so I can take a picture, share it here and let it air a bit!

Your dinosaur quilt is great. My youngest daughter (born '92) loved dinosaurs when she was little, but all she got was a dress out of dinosaur fabric. I think that one day when your son becomes a father he will remember the quilt and wonder what happened to it. Well, that is in the future and for now you get to enjoy the memories.
It's wonderful!!!! And I agree with Marj, someday Takumi will want it for his own child. Thank you for sharing it with us!
Perhaps someday in the future Takumi will have a son to pass on the quilt to.
I agree. Someday your son will want that quilt! And he may decide he wants it for himself and will want you to make another quilt for his child. I really like that orange strip. It brings the quilt to life.
It is a great quilt! Until Takumi remembers it, maybe you can take it to show the kindergartners.
What a cute quilt!
I love the quilt! By seeing your quilt I was reminded of a pattern I had with dinosaurs. Thanks! This will be perfect for my next Linus Quilt.
My son loved Dinosours when he was young, he would have loved that. I think one day Takumi will want it for his child. It is lovely.
